OHOW Wins Coveted 2010 National Design Build Excellence Award from the DBIA
Cogdell Spencer ERDMAN is pleased that our working relationship with the
Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin on their recent replacement hospital project has yielded the Design Build Institute of America’s
2010 National Design Build Excellence Award, in the award category of “Healthcare Projects over $25 Million.”
The Design Build Excellence Award is presented annually to projects that represent successful analysis of design-build strategies resulting in a unique application of teaming to exceed the owner’s expectations.
Eligibility for the awards competition, requires the project be performed under a single-source contract between the owner/user and the design-builder and they must have been completed on-time, on-budget and without litigation. Winning projects are honored for their advanced and innovative application of total integrated project delivery and finding unique solutions for project challenges.
Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin Challenge/OpportunityHaving outgrown their former facility and after conducting a feasibility study to address their future needs, the Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin set out to provide comprehensive orthopaedic services in a 30 bed, ten operating room replacement facility in the Winter of 2008. Given the turbulent political climate and uncertainty of healthcare reform, the time window for replacement was narrow and the stakes were very high. A December 1, 2009 completion date was not only desired, it was the imperative in order to receive their Medicare reimbursement number to remain viable in the industry.
Value Creation from Cogdell Spencer ERDMANCogdell Spencer ERDMAN's integration allowed for the overlapping of planning, design and construction with weekly reports on costs incurred to date as well as decision required and the associated risks involved for each to continue. The 96,000 square foot, $27 million facility was delivered in just 22 months (34 days ahead of schedule) and $3.6 million under the targeted budget. This in turn allowed the owner to see their first patient over a month ahead of schedule and more importantly allowed them to accelerate projected revenues and substantially reduce their debt service.
The collaborative efforts of the OHOW/Cogdell Spencer ERDMAN team were also instrumental in achieving a total project budget that was $8 million under the targeted budget, which further enhances their market position in patient satisfaction, service line price points and overall medical outcomes.
